Total Hip Arthroplasty - Testimonials

Mr Ronald Stear - Total hip Arthroplasty Case Study

Mr Ronald Stear is a retired eighty three year old gentleman. He was initially referred to Mr Johnson by his general practitioner in July 2000 with symptoms resulting from an arthritic left hip. Mr Johnson recommended a left total hip replacement and this was performed in August 2000.

When reviewed in clinic by Mr Johnson in September four weeks following surgery Ronald had made an excellent recovery and had returned to normal activities.

Mr Stear returned to see Mr Johnson in April 2003 three years following the left total hip replacement having enjoyed no further problems with the left hip. On this occasion he presented with right hip pain which was intrusive and interfered with his lifestyle. On examination the range of motion in the right hip was restricted and painful. Therefore arrangements were made for a right total hip replacement which took place in July 2003.

When reviewed by Mr Johnson six weeks following surgery Ronald had made good progress and was symptom free. He was walking without any discomfort using a stick in the left hand. The left hip had an excellent range of motion and was symptom free.

At his last clinic attendance in October 2003 Mr Stear was walking approximately one mile a day, he had no pain and his hip movement was excellent.

Mr Stear said:

"Obviously, I am very happy with the results. I'm walking from one to one and a half miles per day and my range of motion is excellent. I am able to complete the physio exercises with few problems and can move about fairly freely. Overall I feel everything is progressing well and my hip replacement has allowed me to continue my life as before."

Mr Johnson commented:

"Hip replacement remains one of the most successful of all surgical procedures. It can be expected to reliably reduce pain and allow a return to functional activities including regular golf for almost all patients. Newer techniques of uncemented, resurfacing or minimally invasive surgery continue to improve the results which are achievable."
